![]() ![]() Traditional models suggest that Madagascar separated from Africa some 160 million years ago during the breakup of the supercontinent Gondwana. Strange Relationsīeelzebufo's relation to frogs in South America adds another chapter to an ongoing debate about where Madagascar's unique flora and fauna originated. The study describing the newfound frog appears in this week's issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. ![]() "When we found out that that some of its relatives even have little horns on their heads, the 'devil frog from hell' seemed an even more appropriate name," Krause said. The animal sported a protective shield and powerful jaws that may have enabled it to kill hatchling dinosaurs. "And at two or three times the size of the largest living ceratophyrines, Beelzebufo would have had quite a lot more attitude." "They're sometimes called Pac-Man frogs," she added, "and even the little ones will go for you. "They are round with big mouths, and they will sit there and grab onto anything that walks past." "These ceratophyrines are really aggressive, ambush predators," Evans said. ![]() Like its closest modern-day relatives-a group of big-mouthed frogs in South America called ceratophyrines-the devil frog also probably had a very aggressive temperament. ![]() Over the years a 75-piece puzzle emerged that was only recently put together by fossil-frog expert Susan Evans of University College London.Įvans, lead author of a new paper detailing the find, describes the 70-million-year-old frog as a rather intimidating animal the size of a beach ball, 16 inches (41 centimeters) high and weighing about 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms). Paleontologist David Krause of Stony Brook University in New York and his colleagues began unearthing the specimen in bits and pieces more than a decade ago. The bad-tempered Beelzebufo, or "devil frog," also poses a big mystery-Why do its closest relatives live half a world away in South America? In nature Pac-Man frogs gorge themselves when food is plentiful to compensate for when food is scarce.Scientists working in Madagascar have found what may be the largest frog that ever lived. If your frog is looking unnaturally large, cut back on the feeding. The best gauge for how much to feed your Pac-Man frog is to study your Pac-Man frog’s appearance. If allowed to cool down and dry out a little bit, Pac-Man frogs can enter a brumation state where they will refuse food. The amount of food you feed them is based on the size and temperature of the frog. A staple of crickets and/or roaches is best, but they can also eat fish, worms and even small mice. One quality that sets Pac-Man frogs apart from other frogs is their voracious appetite. Live plants, such as Pothos, not only provide hiding spots but also help to process feces and CO2. Pac-Man frogs will also use hiding spots, so reptile hides should be provided. Therefore, normal room temperatures of 65 to 85 degrees are recommended. In captive environments the substrate doesn’t provide the same protection due to lack of depth and the ability for air to move under the tank. While this is true of their natural environment, Pac-Man frogs spend the majority of their time buried in the cool ground. It is widely circulated that Pac-Man frogs need temperatures in the 75 to 85 degree Fahrenheit range. ![]()
